This project continues building on the results from previous work on improving estimates of surface wind speed in tropical cyclones, with the goal to gaining a better understanding of the radiative transfer processes modeled with the Stepped-Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR) algorithm, particularly for precipitation. Researchers collect and organize data needed for the project and develop a method for assessing the SFMR instrument calibration to produce a consistent historical SFMR archive that can be used for this study. The results of this project will provide improved wind speed retrievals from the SFMR to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center, computer forecast models, and researchers for use in analyzing and forecasting cyclones. More accurate surface wind speed estimates will help improve satellite calibration at high winds, provide better estimates of air-sea exchanges of momentum, energy, and mass, and help coastal communities better prepare for land-falling storms. Improved surface wind speeds over the ocean are also critical for providing the marine community with information to improve safety at sea.
