Underwater gliders are increasingly involved in routine, innovative, and emergency data collection in the marine environment, and users of this technology need training. Researchers are developing training and curricula for the Tier 2 Unmanned Systems (UMS) used in the University of Southern Mississippi Uncrewed Marine Systems program. They procured a new Seaglider and developed associated curriculum components, which were used with the first training program in October 2021. The curricula, which are based on syllabi developed by the university and Perspecta with input from the U.S. Navy and NOAA, support three training courses (each worth three credits) for buoyancy glider operations.
