An ocean biogeochemical model is being configured to improve our understanding about potential large-scale climate drivers of shifts in plankton biomass and range for a suite of coastal pelagic species in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Bight. Researchers have configured a Modular Ocean Model – Tracers Of Phytoplankton with Allometric Zooplankton (MOM5-TOPAZ) model for the north Atlantic for the time period of 1958 to 2019 using a new atmospheric dataset for driving ocean-sea-ice models (JRA55-DO) as surface forcing. This test model has a one-quarter degree resolution, which is a necessary first step before increasing model resolution to 10 km. Model outputs are available in the Network Common Data Form (NetCDF) format on the NOAA OAR/AOML server.
